Search Engine Marketing SEM is an umbrella term that encompasses both paid and free forms of advertising a website using search engines such as Google™ or Yahoo™.

Paid advertising or Pay Per Click advertising PPC is the purchase of a listing, usually on the first page, of a search engines results when a word or phrase is entered.

Free or "organic" advertising is obtained via the application of Search Engine Optimization SEO techniques to the content and links of a website. The goal is to obtain a high listing on the results page of the search engines when a specific word or phrase is searched for.
